Pieter Stuyvesant

 

St.Maarteners will tell that his Governorship of St.Maarten was the most important of his two jobs.
He was Governor of New York from 1647 to 1664 when New Amsterdam officially bacamenew York, when New York was exchanged by the Dutch for a large part of the East coast of South America.

 

Pieter Stuyvesant, born in the provence of Friesland in Holland in 1592, became Governor of the Dutch West Indies Isaland (including St.Maarten) in 1643.
He Fought for the possession of St. Maarten as Admiral of the Dutch fleet against the Spanish.
In That battle he lost his right leg. After this, he was nicknamed Peg Leg Pete.
Upon his return to Holland he was appointed by the Dutch West IndiaCompany as Governor New Netherland with it's capital, New York.
